Antihypoxic drug Actovegin and the subtleties of its use in diabetes mellitus

Despite the development of medical technologies, the emergence of new drugs, diabetes mellitus is still not amenable to complete recovery and remains an urgent problem for humanity.

Statistics show that more than 0.2 billion people have this disease, 90% of them suffer from type 2 diabetes.

Such an endocrine disorder increases the risk of strokes, heart attacks, shortens life expectancy. In order to feel normal, patients have to constantly take antihypertensive pills or insulin injections.

Actovegin has proven himself in diabetes. What is this tool and how it works, the basic rules of use - all this will be discussed in the article.

What is Actovegin?

Actovegin is an extract obtained from the blood of calves and purified from protein.. It stimulates tissue repair processes: heals skin wounds quickly and damages the mucous membrane.

Also has an effect on cellular metabolism. Helps improve the transport of oxygen and glucose into cells.

Forms of release of the drug Actovegin

Due to this, the energy resources of the cells increase, the severity of hypoxia decreases. Such processes are important for the functioning of the nervous system. The drug is also useful for normalizing blood circulation. Often it is prescribed to patients with diabetes.

The drug contains nucleosides, amino acids, trace elements (phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, calcium), lipid and carbohydrate metabolism products. These components are actively involved in the cardiovascular system, the brain. In medical practice Actovegin has been used for more than 50 years and always gives a positive result.

Release form

There are different forms of release Actovegin:

  • 5% ointment;
  • pills;
  • 20% gel for external use;
  • injection;
  • 20% eye gel;
  • 5% cream;
  • 0.9% solution for infusion.

For the treatment of diabetes, injection solutions and tablets are used. The active ingredient is deproteinized hemoderivate.

In tablets, it is present in a concentration of 200 mg. Capsules are packaged in blisters and packed in cardboard boxes that hold 10, 30 or 50 tablets. Auxiliary substances are povidone K90, cellulose, magnesium stearate and talc.

Ampoules of injection solution with a volume of 2, 5 or 10 ml contain 40, 100 or 200 mg of the active element, respectively. Additional ingredients are sodium chloride, distilled water. Sell ampoules in a package of 5 or 25 pieces.

Each of the forms of release of the drug is designed to treat a particular disease. To pick up the type of drug for treatment must doctor.

In ointments and creams contains 2 mg of hemoderivata, and in the gel - 8 mg. Creams, ointments and gels are packaged in an aluminum tube of 20.30, 50 or 100 g.

Impact on diabetes

In a person diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Actovegin acts like insulin.

This is achieved due to the presence of oligosaccharides. These substances resume the work of carriers of glucose, of which there are 5 varieties. Each type requires a specific approach, which provides this drug.

Actovegin accelerates the movement of glucose molecules, saturates the cells of the body with oxygen, a beneficial effect on the functioning of the brain and vascular blood flow.

In diabetes, Actovegin reduces the manifestations of diabetic polyneuropathy. Also eliminates burning, tingling, heaviness and numbness in the legs. The drug increases the physical endurance of the body.

The tool restores glucose. If this substance is in deficiency, then the drug helps to maintain human well-being in normal conditions, improves physiological processes.

In addition to insulin-like action, there are data on the effect of Actovegin on insulin resistance.

In 1991, an experiment was conducted in which 10 diabetics of the second type took part. For the past 10 days Actovegin was administered to people at a dosage of 2000 mg intravenously.

At the end of the study, it was revealed that in the observed patients the glucose uptake increased by 85% and also became higher than the clearance of glucose. These changes persisted for 44 hours after discontinuation of the infusion.

The therapeutic effect of Actovegin is achieved thanks to the following mechanisms:

  • production of phosphates with high energy potential increases;
  • stimulates the synthesis of proteins and carbohydrates;
  • enzymes that are involved in oxidative phosphorylation are activated;
  • the breakdown of glucose is accelerated;
  • enzymes that release sucrose and glucose are actively produced;
  • cell activity improves.

The beneficial effect of Actovegin on diabetes mellitus is noted by almost all patients who use this drug for treatment. Negative statements are caused by improper use, hypersensitivity, overdose.

Dosage and overdose

Actovegin dosage depends on the form of release, the type of disease and the severity of its course.

In the first days it is recommended to administer intravenously 10-20 ml of the drug. Then reduce the dose to 5 ml per day.

If used infusion, then enter 10-50 ml. For intramuscular injections, the maximum dosage is 5 ml.

In acute ischemic stroke, 2000 mg per day is shown intravenously. Then the patient is transferred to a tablet form and give three capsules three times a day.

Daily dosage for dementia is 2000 mg. If the peripheral circulation is impaired, it is recommended to use 800-2000 mg per day. Diabetic polyneuropathy is treated with the drug in a dose of 2000 mg per day or tablets (3 pieces three times a day).

Diabetics are advised to start treatment with small doses. Increasing the dosage should be gradual, taking into account well-being.

It is important not to exceed the dosage specified in the instructions and recommended by the doctor. Otherwise there is a high risk of adverse reactions. Symptomatic therapy is indicated to eliminate the unpleasant symptoms caused by overdose. For allergies, corticosteroids or antihistamines are used.

Instructions for use of the drug

In addition to the treatment of diabetes, Actovegin is used for ischemic stroke, impaired cerebral circulation, varicose veins, head injuries, bedsores and burns, eye cornea damage.

The drug can be administered orally, parenterally and topically.

Actovegin in pill form should be taken half an hour before taking a meal or a couple of hours later. In this way, the maximum absorbability of the active component is achieved and the therapeutic effect is quickly reached.

It is important to respect the dosage. For an adult in the instructions advised to use 1-2 tablets per day. If necessary, the doctor may adjust the dose. The duration of treatment is from 1 to 1.5 months.

If a solution is used for injection or infusion, it needs to be injected very slowly, since the drug has a hypotensive effect. It is important that the pressure does not drop sharply. The duration of the course is determined individually for each patient.

The treatment of burns, wounds and ulcers in diabetics is carried out using 20% Actovegin gel. The wound is pre-cleaned with an antiseptic. The gel is applied in a thin layer.

As healing progresses, a scar usually begins to form. To make it disappear, use 5% cream or ointment. Apply three times a day until complete healing. Use should be medicine with a normal shelf life.

You can not use a solution in which there are small inclusions, muddy contents. This suggests that the drug deteriorated due to improper storage. With long-term treatment, diabetics are advised to control water and electrolyte balance. After opening the vial or ampoule is not allowed.

Store the drug should be at a temperature of +5 to +25 degrees. Do not freeze the product. With the wrong savings, the healing effect is reduced.

Drug interaction Actovegin with other drugs is not installed. But in order to avoid possible incompatibility, do not add other medicines to the infusion or injection solution.

Side effects

Actovegin is well tolerated. In rare cases, patients report the appearance of such side effects:

  • allergic reaction (in the form of anaphylactic shock, fever);
  • myalgia;
  • sudden redness of the skin;
  • the formation of edema on the skin;
  • lacrimation, vascular redness of the sclera (for eye gel);
  • fever;
  • itching, burning in the area of application (for ointments, gels);
  • hyperthermia;
  • hives.
At occurrence of side effects, it is necessary to immediately stop taking and consult a doctor. Most likely, you will have to replace the drug with a more appropriate means.

Doctors note that in some situations Actovegin has a bad effect on the functioning of the cardiovascular system. At the same time, the patient has an increase in blood pressure, rapid breathing, fainting, headache, general weakness and indisposition. In violation of the dosage of tablets sometimes nausea, retching, indigestion, pain in the abdominal area.

Contraindications

There is a certain group of people whom Actovegin is not recommended to use.

Contraindications are:

  • hypersensitivity to the active and auxiliary substances of the drug;
  • heart failure in the stage of decompensation;
  • anuria;
  • disorders of the lungs;
  • the period of pregnancy and lactation;
  • fluid retention;
  • age up to three years;
  • oliguria.

With caution you need to take the drug to patients who have been diagnosed with hyperchloremia (plasma chlorine concentration is above normal) or hypernatremia (excess sodium in the blood).

Before using the medicine, it is necessary to make a test for its tolerance. To do this, the drug is injected at a dose of 2-5 ml and evaluate the state of health.
